Teaching assistant at a school for special needs children

Santo Toribio Santo Toribio

Project Overview

With families struggling to cope with the economic and emotional demands of life inhibited by poverty, special needs children are often seen as one challenge too many to cope with. Because of this, children who are mentally or physically disadvantaged are frequently left at home, rendered a lost cause educationally or a source of shame upon the family. Peruvian schools fail those who are handicapped and offered an education through a lack of support and resources, and many drop out or don’t make it through.

Santo Toribio is a special needs school for children from disadvantaged backgrounds, based in a poor area of Trujillo. It promotes a positive, supportive and loving environment in which the children are encouraged to become independent, productive and happy individuals. It was created in 1986 by the Misión de Padres Irlandeses, and now it is supported by the Archbishop of Trujillo. Adopting a unique approach to the children’s education, it offers them the chance to learn valuable practical skills through hands-on workshops in baking, shoe and jewelry -making and woodcraft, as well as basic numerical skills and reading and writing. Equipping the children with this important creative expertise boosts their self-esteem as they transcend the poor life chances they once had and sets them in step for a successful and happy future.

Santo Toribio is based in the Trujillo district of Florencia de Mora. It is roughly an hour long journey from Huanchaco, however the buses are regular and reliable.

Volunteer Roles/ Working Hours
There are currently 151 children registered at Santo Toribio, taught in 16 classrooms. The project allows for between 10 and 15 volunteers at any one time, so there is a real buzz at the school and always plenty going on.

A position with Santo Toribio favours early birds as you will be required to work Monday- Friday from 8a.m.-12noon.

You will work assisting the teachers in the classrooms as well as the workshops, so any experience in woodcraft, shoe/ jewelry -making or baking or a willingness to learn would be an advantage.
