Animal Caretaker's Experience

Jan, volunteered at the dog shelter for 6 weeks

“The dog shelter is a place where 40 dogs are being taken care of to keep them off the streets and prevent them from being killed. The shelter is in a small town outside of Huanchaco called Huanchaquito and you can get there by bus or walking. The bus takes 10 minutes and costs 50 cents. At the shelter, I helped out with everything; cleaning the shelter, walking the dogs, doing some fundraising, buying food for the dogs, keeping the dogs company. I really enjoyed the experience. It was nice to be with the dogs even though, sometimes, nothing really happens. Moreover, Peruvian people don’t really care about dogs, and it is sometimes hard to feel like you’re doing something useful.”
