Why volunteer & why with us?

Why Volunteer?

Volunteer service is the most direct way to share the good fortune you’ve had in life with someone or a group of people who have been less fortunate. Some people volunteer in order to obtain a deeper experience than simply traveling in a foreign land. Others come with a head full of ideas on how to help the less fortunate in our world. At the end of their time spent volunteering, however, nearly everyone returns home with a heart full of memories.  Most people find that after volunteering in a place like Peru, they have a deeper understanding of the way much of the world population lives,  a greater respect for those living and working there, and an increased appreciation for the things we take for granted on a daily basis.

Why Volunteer with Us?

Otra Cosa Network is a registered UK Charity (registration number: 1133680) and Peruvian NGO. Since 2007 we have been creating and maintaining projects that help the people of Peru at a local level and with volunteer labor, materials, and funding. We work with local project managers who appreciate the effort of the volunteers we send them and do everything possible to ensure that your volunteer experience is a positive one. Huanchaco (our headquarter city) is a tranquil beach community in the north of Peru. The locals are friendly and interested in what you are doing and security around town is high. Huanchaco is a great environment for learning Spanish and surfing, and has all the charm of a small community with the services of more developed areas. If you find yourself missing or craving big city life, Trujillo is just a 20 minute cambi (bus) ride away!

OCN does charge a fee for the services we provide, but if you search the internet for similar volunteer opportunities and coordination organizations in this region and abroad, you will find that we are amongst the least expensive and most involved. The money from the fee goes toward keeping our services operational and our projects sustainable.
